When comparing one- and two-tailed tests, it should be remembered that for a two-tailed test, the level of significance or α, is halved for coming up with the critical region. α is not halved for a one-tailed test. Thus, a two tailed test critical value is more stringent than the one-tailed test critical value. While the critical value corresponds to α/2 for a two-tailed test, it corresponds to α for a one-tailed test. The greater the α lower the level of confidence. For example, the critical value for a 5% 2-tailed test would correspond to the critical value for a 2.5% 1-tailed test.
