Price weighted indexes, of which Dow Jones and Nikkei-Dow are examples, suffer from a downward bias due to stock splits. Value-weighted averages suffer from a large company bias and equally weighted averages suffer from a small company bias. In the former large companies dominate, whereas in the latter, small companies have weights greater than their proportional value. In a price-weighted average, companies with higher prices dominate.
